Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - Maxx Tissenbaum's two-out, two-run single to right brought home the tying and go-ahead runs for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the seventh inning Monday night in a 6-5 victory over the Great Lakes Loons.
The single came off reliever Owen Jones, who inherited the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh from reliever Scott Griggs (2-6), who was credited with the loss. Griggs walked two in two-thirds of an inning but also struck out three, with one batter reaching on a wild pitch.
The Loons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Following walks by Malcolm Holland and Kevin Taylor against Fort Wayne starter Walker Weickel, Corey Seager hit a drive off the wall in straight-away center field to bring home Holland. With Taylor tagging up, Seager had to settle for a single. Taylor later scored on a wild pitch.
With the score tied 2-2, the Loons reclaimed the lead in the fifth. After reliever Colin Rea walked Tyler Ogle with the bases loaded to give the Loons a one-run lead. The next batter Aaron Miller worked an impressive 14-pitch at-bat before singling home two runs to give the Loons a 5-2 advantage.
Fort Wayne responded with a pair of runs in the fifth to pull to within one run, setting the stage for Tissenbaum's heroics.
Miller and Jeremy Rathjen finished the game with two hits each. Brandon Martinez started for the Loons and pitched four innings and faced three batters in the fifth. He was charged with four runs (all earned) and eight hits, walking and striking out three. Arismendy Ozoria threw two scoreless relief innings.
Fort Wayne catcher Dane Phillips notched four singles and one walk. Lefty Chris Nunn (7-0) collected the win with two scoreless relief innings. Roman Madrid worked a scoreless ninth inning for his 14th save.
Great Lakes (13-6 second half, 40-49 overall) begins a six-game home stand Wednesday with the first game of a three-game series against the Burlington Bees (5-13, 31-52). Game time is 7:05pm. Sixteen year-old left-hander Julio Urias (2-2, 2.78 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons. He will be opposed by lefty Nic DellaTorre (0-1, 18.90). Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL.
The game will feature an appearance by "Miracle on Ice" team member Ken Morrow on a Michigan Legends Series Night, presented by MidMichigan Health.
NOTES: Prior to the game, right-handed pitcher James Campbell joined the ballclub. Righty Alan Garcia was sent to extended spring training... Griggs and Rodriguez were named the Dodgers' June Pride Award winners for their efforts in the previous month.
The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
