Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids rallied for three runs in the seventh and threatened in the eighth but could not muster enough runs to overcome South Bend on a beautiful Memorial Day afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Silver Hawks used single runs in the fifth and seventh to give them a 6-4 edge over the Kernels in front of 2,658 fans.
Three consecutive singles by Warner Madrigal, Tommy Duenas, and Jordan Renz got things going for the Kernels in the seventh. With the bases loaded Richard Giannotti hit a sacrifice fly to plate Madrigal and then Alexi Casilla doubled to left-center to clear the bags. South Bend starter A. J. Shappi recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
With Chris Walston on third in the eighth following a double by Madrigal, South Bend reliever Hipolito Guerrero got Tommy Duenas to fly out to right to snuff out the Kernel rally.
Shappi went seven innings for his 8th victory of the year with Guerrero earning his first save. Karl Gelinas was the losing pitcher for the Kernels despite a strong outing that saw him last 7 innings. Gelinas allowed 10 hits but just four runs.
South Bend scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings with the big blow coming on a two-run homer to right by Carlos Gonzalez in the third frame.
Casilla put the Kernels on the board in the fifth with a liner to right that scored Duenas, but Richard Giannotti was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from first to end the inning.
Madrigal finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored as the Kernels dropped to 20-31 on the season. Duenas had a solid day at the plate going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Casilla was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI.
The Kernels say good-bye to the Eastern Division-leading Silver Hawks and welcome the best in the West, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, for four games beginning tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 for Hoover and Truman Elementary Nights at the stadium sponsored by WMT Mix 96.5.
