Dayton Dragons News Release
Burlington, IAâ The Dayton Dragons (21-29) needed a win on Monday afternoon against the Burlington Bees (23-27) to give the Miami Valley's team a winning road trip at 5-3 over the eight game swing at West Michigan and Burlington. Things looked good early as the Dragons jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Burlington answered with eight straight runs on route to a 8-3 win in the final game of the series.
Dayton got off to a quick start with three runs in the top of the second off Burlington starter Patrick Green (WP, 3-3). John Purdom picked up a one out single and scored on a Cody Strait RBI double to left for a 1-0 lead. Phil Gentry plated the second Dayton run with an RBI sac fly. With two down and Mayker Sandoval at first, Paul Janish doubled to right center field scoring Sandoval for a 3-0 lead. Janish tried to stretch the double into a triple and was thrown out to end the inning.
Burlington cut into the Dayton lead with a single run off Homer Bailey (LP, 1-2) in the bottom of the second. All of the action took place with two down. Two walks from Bailey and a single loaded the bases. Bailey's second balk of the inning scored Kenard Springer with the first run of the afternoon and the Dayton advantage was trimmed to 3-1.
In the third, Burlington delivered the knock out blow to Bailey and the Dragons. The Bees picked up a run on a Rusty Brown RBI single to make it a 3-2 game. Former Reds farmhand Alan Moye struck the crushing blow with a three run blast over the left field wall off Bailey for a 5-3 Burlington lead. Bailey was lifted in favor of Carlos Bohorquez (ND), who allowed the first three hitters he faced to reach base before recording an out. The first out was a run producing groundball, giving the Bees a 6-3 lead through three.
Bailey's 2.0 innings of work matched his shortest of the season and his five runs allowed, four earned, tied a season high. The right hander struck out three, walked two, was called for two balks and threw a wild pitch.
The Bees extended the advantage to 8-3 with a pair in the eighth inning off Jared Sanders (ND). Moye came up with the bases loaded and delivered a two RBI single to give him five on the afternoon.
The lone bright spot for the Dragons on the mound was Brad Morenko (ND). The right hander shutout the Bees in his 3.0 innings of work, allowing four hits. He was only Dayton pitcher to not surrender a run to the Bees during his stint on the hill.
The Dragons and South Bend Silver Hawks open up a four game series at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night with a 7:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. The Dragons will send RHP Ramon Ramirez to the mound, while the Silver Hawks will counter with LHP Kellen Raab.
