Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays hit into five double-plays in a 5-3 loss to the Beloit Snappers on Memorial Day Monday at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Minnesota Twins second round draft pick in 2004, Anthony Swarzak, had not allowed a run in the month of May in four starts until today when the Devil Rays broke through in the fourth inning with one earned run. The score brought Southwest Michigan within 4-3 but could not get closer as Beloit scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth for the 5-3 final.
The Devil Rays used 11 hits but suffered the damage inflicted by hitting into double-plays in the second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Down 4-0, the Rays scored three times in the fifth frame in part because of two errors. Reid Brignac contributed a two-run double and a John Jaso RBI single in the fifth to account for the three runs.
Brandon Mann went seven innings and allowed six hits, three walks and three strikeouts along with five runs and four earned. Calvin Carpenter finished the game with two scoreless innings. Jaso led the team with three hits.
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays contributed $1,083 to SexualAssault Services of Calhoun County in fallen police Detective LaVern Brann's name based on $1 for each ticket sold for the games of May 28-30.
Devil Rays LHP James Houser (2-3, 3.75) will start in a four-game set against the Chicago Cubs affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs, Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m in another WIN 98.5 and Red Hot Chicago Penny Hot Dog night. Peoria will send RHP Matt Weber (3-5, 2.80) to the mound.
