Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
DAVENPORT, IA -- Rob Johnson homered twice and had four hits as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers banged out 17 hits on their way to an 11-4 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities on Memorial Day at John O'Donnell Stadium. Matt Tuiasosopo also had four hits for Wisconsin. Both Johnson and Tuiasosopo had three RBI. The win pushed Wisconsin's lead over the Swing to 1-1/2 games in the Midwest League's Western Division. The Clinton LumberKings rallied to beat Peoria at home and the L-Kings are now in second place one game behind the Timber Rattlers with nineteen games remaining in the first half.
Wisconsin (30-21) jumped on Swing starting pitcher Matt Scherer early and often. Mike Wilson drilled a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Johnson had an RBI single in the second inning. Tuiasosopo stepped to the plate with two out and the bases loaded later in the second. The Rattler shortstop cleared the bases with a double to right field to push the Rattler lead to 6-0.
The Rattlers added two more runs in the top of the third. Yung Chi Chen scored when Scherer dropped a throw to the plate at the end of a rundown. Oswaldo Navarro's sacrifice fly made it 8-0.
Quad Cities (28-22) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Rick Ankiel hit a two-run home run to right field off Rattler starting pitcher Mark Lowe. The homer snapped Lowe's scoreless streak at 12-1/3 innings.
Chen made the score 9-2 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth.
A two-run single by Jake Mullinax in the bottom of the fifth inning got the Swing to within 9-4. But, Rob Johnson's sixth home run of the season, which started the top of the sixth inning, put the Rattlers in front 10-4. Johnson added his second home run of the day to lead off the top of the eighth.
The Rattlers went to the bullpen for the bottom of the sixth inning. Lowe worked five innings, allowed eight hits, walked two, and struck out one to earn his fourth win of the season. Reliever Kendall Bergdall pitched three scoreless innings and Cibney Bello worked a scoreless ninth.
The Rattlers have gone 7-1 in the first eight games of their current twelve game road trip.
