Iowa Cubs News Release

Iowa starter Andrew Cashner (3-0, 0.95) out-dueled Colorado Springs starting pitcher Alan Johnson (4-1, 2.25) and led the Cubs to a 1-0 victory over the Sky Sox Saturday night at Principal Park. With the win, Iowa pushed its winning streak to five and they have now won 11 of their last 12 games.

In his third start of the season for Iowa, Cashner tied his career-high in innings pitched, throwing 95 pitches--66 for strikes--giving up two hits and striking out seven over seven strong innings for Iowa. He retired the first 13 batters he faced and only allowed three to reach base.

Sky Sox starter Alan Johnson suffered his first loss of the season and faced trouble early, working himself into a bases loaded situation with two outs in the first inning. Darwin Barney and Micah Hoffpauir both singled and Brad Snyder walked to load the bases, but Johnson got Bryan LaHair to fly out to end the inning.

Johnson again got into a jam when the top of the order rolled around in the third inning. Jim Adduci singled to lead off the inning and moved to third a batter later on Barney's single. Johnson then got Bobby Scales to ground into a double play that brought home Adduci for the lone run of the game.

Iowa's top two batters in the order, Adduci and Barney, had two hits apiece to pace the Cubs. Barney's two singles continued his hot streak during May and brought his average during the month to .400 (36-for-90).

Brain Schlitter pitched two innings for Iowa to pick up the save, his fourth of the season.

Iowa and Colorado Springs will close out the season series tomorrow at Principal Park with a 1:05 p.m. start. LH Josh Muecke (0-2, 7.50) will get the call for the Sky Sox while LH J.R. Mathes (3-4, 5.52) will take the mound for the Cubs.
