Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers held on for a 5-3 win over New Orleans at Cheney Stadium on Saturday. The victory clinched the franchise's first-ever series win over the Zephyrs in the 12-year history between the two teams and came in spite of Tacoma recording five errors in a game for the first time since July 24, 2004.

The majority of the Rainiers offense came from the third through the fifth innings, with Tacoma scoring five runs on eight hits. Designated hitter Tommy Everidge started things off with a double to left that scored Matt Mangini in the third. Home runs from outfielder Greg Halman and Mike Carp over the next two innings led to a five-run Rainiers advantage in the fifth.

The Zephyrs attempted a rally with three runs over the sixth and seventh, thanks in large part to the Rainiers committing four errors over that two-inning span, but the New Orleans comeback was squashed after second baseman Ramon Vazquez added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer.

Carp and Vazquez led the Rainiers lineup after each posted 2-for-4 performances with two RBI. Outfielder Neil Wilson recorded a pair of doubles for the Zephyrs with an RBI.

Starter Luke French collected the win for Tacoma after holding the Zephyrs to three runs, one earned, on four hits over 6.2 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts. New Orleans starter Hunter Jones was stuck with the loss, allowing three runs to score, two earned, on five hits in a brief three-inning effort.

The Rainiers return to Cheney Stadium on Sunday afternoon for their series finale against New Orleans, with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. Right-hander Steven Shell is scheduled to take the mound against Zephyrs right-hander Hunter Lawrence in the final meeting between the two teams this season.
