Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers enlisted the help of some late-inning heroics in a 7-5 win over New Orleans at Cheney Stadium on Friday.
Trailing the Zephyrs 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, outfielder Mike Wilson belted a walk-off three-run home run to center field that put the Rainiers over the top in the outing.
The table was set for the game-winning long ball beginning with first baseman Brad Nelson's lead-off single to center in the ninth. Mike Carp took note in the next at-bat and notched another base hit, putting both men on for Wilson.
Wilson proved to be the banner performer for the Rainiers in the outing after going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI in a game-winning effort. New Orleans outfielder Lorenzo Scott was responsible for the majority of the Zephyrs offense thanks to a three-run home run in the top of the second inning.
The win went to the Rainiers Levale Speigner after the reliever held New Orleans to two hits over a scoreless inning of work in the ninth. Right-handed reliever Kasey Olenberger was dealt the loss after giving up the walk-off homer to Wilson after just 0.2 innings of action.
Starter Andy Baldwin went five innings for Tacoma, surrendering four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in a no decision.
Tacoma looks to extend their winning stretch to three games when they host New Orleans at Cheney Stadium again tomorrow, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. Going to the mound for the Rainiers will be left-hander Luke French, while New Orleans counters with fellow southpaw Hunter Jones.
