Lancaster Stormers News Release
Cesar Carrillo scattered 10 hits over seven innings, pitching Lancaster to a 6-3 victory over the Road Warriors Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win, combined with York's 7-0 loss at Long Island, puts the Barnstormers ahead by three games in the Freedom Division race. Both teams have 11 games remaining in the first half, including four against each other at the finish line.
Carrillo (2-4) allowed at least one hit in all seven innings he worked, but the only runs scored by the Road Warriors during his stint were on solo homers by Josh Johnson in the fifth and Sean Henry in the seventh. The right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
Gilberto Mejia gave the Barnstormers an early spark, riding a 3-2 pitch from Luke Massetti (5-4) onto the picnic tents in right field for his third homer of the season and a 1-0 lead. In the third, Mejia almost single-handedly produced Lancaster's second run. He walked with one out, stole second with Ozzie Chavez at the plate and raced to third when Johnson's throw skipped into center. Chavez brought him home with a grounder to second.
Newcomer, Brandon King, at age 20, the youngest player to don a Barnstormers uniform, beat out an infield single with one out in the fifth. He sprinted to third on a single up the middle by Mejia and drew a late throw enabling Mejia to go to second. Chavez singled over the head of second baseman Amadeo Zazueta to drive in another Lancaster run for a 3-1 lead.
Angel Flores made it 4-1 with an RBI single off shortstop Danny Gonzalez' glove in the sixth. Chavez beat out a bunt with two outs in the seventh and scored when Tommy Everidge slashed a double into the right field corner. Everidge, in turn, came around when Fernando Seguignol slammed a long single off the wall in right for a 6-2 advantage.
The Road Warriors did get the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth following an RBI double by Michael Mooney that sailed over Flores' head in right and a walk to Carlos Sosa. T.J. Beam retired Gonzalez on a fly ball to left to end the game.
Lancaster and the Road Warriors wrap up their three-game series Thursday evening at 7:00. The Barnstormers will send right-hander Matt Wright (1-5) to the hill against southpaw Miguel Martinez (4-4). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
NOTES: Everidge's double was his 20th of the season...The franchise record is 35...Lancaster turned a double play for the eighth straight game...They have converted at least one in 21 of 22 games and a total of 67 ground ball DP's on the season...The run off Beam in the ninth was the first against the bullpen in 18 2/3 innings...Lancaster won back-to-back games for the first time since June 10-11, also with the Road Warriors in town.
