Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Bridgeport, CT - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs exploded for 14 runs on 16 hits, including nine runs in the first, en route to an easy 14-2 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish on Wednesday night at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT.

The nine runs in the first were the most runs that the Blue Crabs have scored in one inning this season. The scoring started on an RBI single from shortstop Yunesky Sanchez. Four batter later, with the bases loaded and two out, second baseman Iggy Suarez provided the big blow with a bases clearing double to left-centerfield to give Southern Maryland a 4-0 lead.

Following a walk to first baseman Tanner Townsend, centerfielder Jeremy Owens provided an RBI double to extend the lead to five. After a walk to third baseman Brandon Pinckney reloaded the bases, leftfielder Casey Benjamin hit a blooper into leftfield that leftfielder Steven Moss and shortstop Angel Berroa collided on allowing the ball to drop. An error was charged to Berroa on the play and two more runs scored to make the tally 7-0. Sanchez provided the final blow of the inning with a two-run double to left-center to give the Blue Crabs a commanding 9-0 lead.

From there the Blue Crabs added on run in the second and three runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Owens, Pinckney, Benjamin and Sanchez to make the score 13-0.

Bridgeport's only two runs came on a two-run homer from designated hitter Brock Peterson (4) before Townsend (3) retaliated with a solo homer of his own to give the Blue Crabs a 14-2 lead.

Southern Maryland got three hits apiece from Pinckney, Owens, and Sanchez with the latter driving in four runs. Peterson went 2-3 with a homer and double to lead the Bluefish who only had four hits on the night.

The beneficiary of the Southern Maryland offensive outburst was starter Michael Schlact (3-0) who got the win after two runs on four hits in six innings of work while walking none and striking out five. Starter Paul Oseguera (4-2) suffered the loss for Bridgeport after allowing nine runs on five hits in only 0.2 innings of work.

Reliever Joe Gannon pitched the final three innings for the Blue Crabs to get his first save of the season. He and Schlact combined to retire 14 of the final 15 Bridgeport hitters.

The Blue Crabs will close their three-game series on Thursday at 7:05 against the Bluefish. The Blue Crabs will send righty Brian Slocum (3-2, 4.15 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Brad Furnish (1-1, 3.34 ERA) for the Bluefish. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
