York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution ran into the league's top pitcher in Long Island's Mike Loree on Wednesday night, falling victim to a 7-0 shutout in front of 6,018 fans at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, NY. The Revs slip to three games behind Lancaster for first place with 11 remaining in the season's first half, and will look to avoid the sweep on Thursday before returning home for a six-game homestand.
Loree (9-1) earned his league-leading ninth win while lowering his league-best ERA to 1.73. The righty went a season-high eight innings, did not walk a batter, and struck out four. He still has not allowed more than two earned runs in any appearance all season.
Lefty Jack Spradlin made a spot start for the Revs when scheduled starter John VanBenschoten was scratched with neck stiffness. Spradlin's first two innings were scoreless, but the Ducks scored three times in the third.
With runners at second and third and one out, Spradlin struck out Matt Esquivel for what would have been the second out, but Esquivel reached on a wild pitch, and Kennard Jones scored from third for the game's first run. Matt Padgett then legged out an attempted double play to drive in the second run, and J.R. House followed with an RBI double to left-center.
Long Island blew it open with four two-out runs in the eighth. Kraig Binick drove in the first on a bloop single that landed just inside the right field line. Then after working the count full and fouling off several pitches, ninth place hitter Dan Lyons battled his way on with a walk, loading the bases for Jones who slapped a three-run double to left-center to cap the scoring.
Notes: Revs DH Jose Herrera (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games with a bunt single in the fourth, tying the Revs' longest streak of the season. Vince Harrison (2-for-3) extended his streak to 10 consecutive games, having now hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games overall. Eric Eymann (0-for-3) lost a 13-game hitting streak, while James Shanks (0-for-4) lost a nine-gamer. Val Majewski (1-for-4) extended his streak to 11 games with a sixth inning double, the Revs' lone extra-base hit of the night. he was one of only two baserunners to reach scoring position for York. Ronnie Morales and Geoff Geary each worked two scoreless innings in relief for the Revs. It was York's second shutout loss of the season. Their three-game losing streak is their first since June 10-12 at Southern Maryland, a streak that ended with their only other shutout loss. York's six hits were their fewest since June 15. It ended a club-record streak of nine consecutive games with 10 hits or more. The Revs' streak of four consecutive series wins is snapped. Long Island improves to 8-0-1 in their last nine series, while lowering their magic number to clinch the Liberty Division's first half title to five. York's Corey Thurman (6-2, 2.69) will face Long Island's Mike Parisi (5-2, 3.11) in the series finale on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, Shoutcast.com (WPDC), and YorkRevsTV.com beginning at 6 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
