Arkansas Travelers News Release
Dickey-Stephens Park, North Little Rock, Arkansas - The Springfield Cardinals (32-30, 68-60) delivered the largest blowout of the season in a 16-0 defeat of the Arkansas Travelers (31-31, 62-70). Unloading 19 base hits plus home runs by Colby Rasmus (league-leading 26th) and Mark Hamilton (5), the Cards knocked the Travs 1.5 games out of first place and two games out of the wildcard. Springfield P.J. Walters (3-3) earned the win with seven shutout innings allowing just six base hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Arkansas RHP Robert Mosebach (0-1) took the loss in his double-A debut giving up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and four walks in six innings. Springfield 3B Rico Washington was 4-for-5 with four singles, an RBI and three runs scored. Hamilton drove in five runs with a two-run single, a two-run homer and a bases-loaded walk. Now shutout in consecutive games, the Travs have lost four of five games. Ben Johnson and Coby Smith led the Travs with two singles, but only one Trav runner advanced to third base.
The Cards jumped ahead of the game's first swing as Rasmus belted the Mosebach's second pitch over the right-field wall for a 1-0 lead. Mosebach issued a one-out walk to Cody Haerther and Amaury Marti singled to center. Washington then smacked a shot that bounced past first base for an RBI single while Marti advanced to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Anderson for a 3-0 Cards lead.
Mosebach missed with his first eight pitches of the second inning walking Casey Rowlett and Juan Lucena. Then a pitch glanced off Johnson's catcher's mitt moving the runners up. With one out, Jose Martinez hit a dribbler back to the mound and Mosebach threw wildly to the plate for an error allowing Rowlett to score, but Lucena was tagged out on his attempt at crossing the plate. Martinez tried for second base and was thrown out by Mosebach for a double play.
Singles by Marti and Washington plus a walk to Anderson loaded the bases for Springfield in the third inning. Hamilton punched a two-run single to right field giving the Cards a 6-0 lead.
Mosebach did not allow a run over his last two innings, mostly thanks to outstanding plays in the field by CF Brad Coon and 2B Adam Morrissey. Coon hauled in a drive at the centerfield warning track in the fifth inning, while Morrissey made a diving play of a grounder hit by Martinez in the sixth inning.
RHP Chris Hunter relieved in the seventh inning and allowed Hamilton's two-run homer. Then in a long eighth inning, the Cards scored seven runs on five base hits and three walks to put the game far out of reach.
Travs 3B Ryan Leahy came on to pitch the ninth inning and delivered the game's only perfect inning.
Time of game was 2:36 and the paid attendance was 4,599.
The Travs play their last home game of the regular season on Monday night. RHP Miguel Gonzalez (7-3, 2.99 ERA) will pitch for the Travelers against Springfield LHP Eric Haberer (12-7, 4.07 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the gates open at 6:10 p.m.
