Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Wade LeBlanc pushed San Antonio one game closer to a second-half crown Monday night, holding the Hooks to one run and three hits through seven innings as the Missions knocked off Corpus Christi 8-1 in the series finale at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Corpus Christi (33-30, 64-69), having dropped the four-game set, falls to four games behind first-place San Antonio in the Texas League South with seven games remaining in the second half.
LeBlanc (6-3) struck out eight through the first five innings and finished by retiring the final 14 batters he faced. The lefty out of Lake Charles, Louisiana, exited with a season-high 10 strikeouts and was part of a Missions pitching staff which limited Corpus Christi to four runs and 15 hits over the four games.
The Hooks struck for their lone run in the first. Drew Sutton, who collected three of Corpus Christi's five hits, opened the game with his 26th double of the season, a line drive to left field. Two outs later, Todd Self punched a single through the right side, scoring Sutton for a 1-0 lead.
San Antonio (36-25, 67-64) answered with one away in the bottom half when Will Venable singled to center field. Corpus Christi starter Miguel Asencio then induced a groundout of Peter Ciofrone, but uncorked two wild pitches during the next at-bat, allowing Venable to tie the score at one.
The Missions grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third. Ciofrone cracked a one-out double into right field. Asencio (1-2) retired Chad Huffman on a grounder to short before Tim Brown blistered a two-bagger over the head of Josh Flores in center, plating Ciofrone from second base.
Two-out RBI singles by Colt Morton and Drew Macias doubled San Antonio's advantage in the fifth. Flores minimized the damage after firing a one-hop throw from center field to cut down Morton at home plate on Brett Dowdy's line-drive single.
Asencio, 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA in his previous three starts, lasted five innings and surrendered four runs off eight hits. He walked three and struck out two.
Hooks reliever Ryan Thompson did not fare any better in the following frame. Thompson issued a lead-off walk to LeBlanc before Matt Antonelli and Venable hit back-to-back doubles, putting the Missions up by five.
San Antonio tagged Jimmy Barthmaier for two more runs in the seventh. Luis Cruz and Dowdy both singled with one away. Antonelli then drove in Cruz with a single to center, while Dowdy accounted for Venable's third RBI of the night on an infield base hit.
Corpus Christi concludes the regular season with a seven-game homestand against division front-runners Frisco and San Antonio, beginning Tuesday at 7:05. The RoughRiders' Scott Shoemaker (5-2) will face southpaw Josh Muecke (8-5) in the opener.
