Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Dirk Hayhurst tossed five shutout innings to lead the San Antonio Missions to a 4-0 win over the Hooks in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader at Wolff Municipal Stadium, gaining a split in the twin bill for the home team. The Hooks rallied for two runs in the seventh to win the opener 3-2.
The split keeps the Hooks three games behind the Missions for first place in the Texas League South with eight games remaining in the half.
The Hooks grabbed a quick lead in game one, taking advantage of Drew Sutton's leadoff double on the game's second pitch. Neil Sellers bunted Sutton to third, and Todd Self brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Missions responded with two in the second on back-to-back two-out, RBI doubles by Luis Cruz and Mike Ekstrom, San Antonio's starting pitcher. Ekstrom's double to the gap in left-center was his first hit in 12 at-bats this season.
It remained 2-1 San Antonio until the seventh, when Self walked to start the frame. Ray Sadler's seeing-eye single into left chased Self to third and knocked Ekstrom (7-10) out of the game. Closer Edwin Moreno, seven for seven in save chances, entered at that point but could not preserve the one-run lead.
Francisco Caraballo, who came on in the third as a defensive replacement, pounded a double to left to knot the score at 2-2. The next batter, Lou Santangelo, lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Sadler from third for a 3-2 Hooks' lead.
Kyle Middleton retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for his 20th save, wrapping up the win for Ryan Thompson (4-3), who tossed a shutout sixth. Briam Bogusevic, Corpus Christi's starter, allowed two runs over five innings.
In the nightcap, Hayhurst (4-1), making his first start of the year after 29 relief appearances, blanked the Hooks on two hits. He did not issue a walk and fanned two.
The Missions got the only run they needed in the second when Matt Antonelli walked with the bases loaded to plate Tim Brown. Brown reached first on a soft infield hit that Hooks' starter German Melendez missed just off the hill. Later in the inning, Brown was safe at third on a throwing error by Melendez.
Despite his shaky defense, Melendez (6-5) pitched well, allowing just the one unearned run over four innings. He gave up two hits and three walks while striking out four, and finished by retiring the last seven men he faced.
Will Venable's two-run home run in the fifth helped seal the result for the Missions.
The Hooks play their final road game of the regular season Monday night at 7:05 as they wrap up the four-game series at San Antonio. Miguel Asencio gets the call for the Hooks, while the Missions go with southpaw Wade LeBlanc.
