San Antonio Missions News Release

SAN ANTONIO - Texas League President Tom Kayser announced this morning that Missions third baseman Chase Headley and Missions Pitcher Josh Geer were named Texas League Player and Pitcher of the Year. Geer and Headley join Catcher Nick Hundley and Outfielder Will Venable on the Texas League Post-Season All-Star Team.

Chase Headley is currently leading the Texas League with a .326 Batting Average and ranks 5th in Homeruns with 19 and 6th in Runs Batted In with 74. The switch hitter flirted all season long with chance at winning a Texas League Triple Crown, despite spending 16 days with the San Diego Padres in mid-June. Chase played in seven games with Padres during that span and picked up three major league hits before returning to San Antonio. Headley's slugging percentage of .574 not only leads the Texas League this season, but also ranks 7th overall in San Antonio Missions history and is currently the highest any player has had in the Wolff Stadium era. Chase received the maximum number of votes (21) possible for Player of the Year honors. (The three voting members from San Antonio are not allowed to vote for Missions players) Headley becomes the 8th San Antonio player to win Player of the Year honors, which includes Major League Stars, Joe Morgan (1964) and Steve Sax (1981). The Fountain, CO native was a second-round pick out of the University of Tennessee in 2005 by the San Diego Padres.

Josh Geer currently leads the Texas League with 15 wins and his 3.23 ERA is ranks as second best in the league. He has been the anchor of the Missions pitching staff that has a team ERA of 3.88. Geer started the season by winning seven of his first eight games and since mid-June is 8-2. Geer made one start this season at Triple-A Portland tossed six innings, allowing two runs to pick up the win and giving 16 total for the year. His 16 wins ties him for the most in all of Minor League Baseball thus far this season. Geer is now the 10th San Antonio player to win Pitcher of the Year honors, joining former Missions players Dennis Eckersley (1974) and Eric Gagne (1999). The Forney, Texas native was a third-round pick out of Rice University in 2005 by the San Diego Padres.

Missions' catcher Nick Hundley and Outfielder Will Venable were named to the Texas League Post-Season All-Star team along with Geer and Headley. Hundley's 20 homeruns currently ranks fourth best in the Texas League and Nick throws out 37% (3rd best in the league) of runners. Venable's 135 hits is fourth best in the Texas League and his 21 Stolen bases ranks 5th best in the league.

The Missions are in the middle of a heated battle for the Texas League South Division 2nd half title and a chance to play in the Texas League Play-offs. Currently, the Missions hold a 1½ game lead over the Frisco RoughRiders with nine games to play. The Missions finish up their regular season at Wolff Stadium this week with Corpus tonight at Wolff Stadium and then Tuesday - Friday night against the Midland RockHounds.
