Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
(Eastlake, OH)-Trevor Crowe drove in two runs, including the eventual game-winner, in his Lake County Captains debut Wednesday as the Captains edged the Lakewood BlueClaws 5-3 before 7,326 fans at Classic Park.
Crowe, a 22-year-old outfielder from the University of Arizona, was the Tribe's top pick in the first-year player draft last month. He made his first Captains appearance Wednesday after being promoted from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He hit lead-off and played center field, and finished 2-4 in the game with two RBI.
The Captains (7-6, 47-36) snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth inning on four consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly off Lakewood's Andy Baldwin (2-6). After Marshall Szabo and Jose Ortega hit one-out singles, Juan Valdes stroked a single to left to score Szabo for a 1-0 lead. Crowe, a switch-hitter, then rolled a grounder through the right side to chase home Ortega for his first Captains hit and RBI. Brian Finegan capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Valdes and give the Captains a 3-0 lead.
Captains starter Dan Cevette cruised through the first six innings, holding the BlueClaws scoreless. After recording two outs in the seventh, he issued a walk to Chris Klemm, and gave up a double to Sean Gamble. Pinch-hitter Doug Gredvig then launched a three-run homer to left to tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Szabo and Ortega reached again on a walk and single, respectively. After a sacrifice by Valdes, Crowe lined a single up the middle to drive in Szabo for a 4-3 lead. Crowe was then caught in a rundown after breaking for second, but Ortega scored during the play for a 5-3 lead.
Kyle Collins (4-4) picked up the win for the Captains, working 1 1/3 innings following Cevette. Kieran Mattison pitched the ninth for his 15th save.
The Captains have won five of he last six games, and will remain at home to start a four-game series against Delmarva on Thursday night at 7:05 (WELW AM 1330).
