
BlueClaws drop series to Captains

East Lake, OH - The Lakewood BlueClaws (8-5) wrapped up their series with the Lake County Captains (7-6), Single-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, on Wednesday with a 5-3 loss. The Captains plated two runs in the seventh to break up a 3-3 tie for the win.
Lakewood starter Andy Baldwin worked into the seventh inning allowing a lead off walk then a base hit to put two runners on with no outs. The next batter dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up then Trevor Crowe, the Indians first round pick in this year's baseball draft and 14th overall, connected for an RBI base hit to put the Captains up 4-3.
Lake County scored their other run in the inning when Crowe was picked off trying to steal second. On the play Jose Ortega scored from third to put the Captains up 5-3.
Lakewood trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh before scoring three runs in the inning to tie the game up at 3-3. With two outs Chris Klemm connected for double then Sean Gamble walked to put runners on first and second. Doug Gredvig then came into the game to pinch hit for catcher Derek Brant and connected for a three-run homer to tie the game. It was Gredvig's seventh homer of the year and first pinch hit homer of the year.
The Captains took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning plating three runs on four hits. After the lead off batter grounded out to start the inning, back-to-back base hits put runners on first and third. Juan Valdes then connected for an RBI base hit for the first run of the game. Crowe followed up with an RBI base hit plating Orega to put the Captains up 2-0. Brian Finegan followed up with a sacrifice fly plating Valdes from third for the third run of the inning.
Baldwin (L, 2-5) allowed all five runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two over 6 1/3 innings. Cory Duiett came into the seventh and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.
Lakewood, currently 3-2 on their nine game road trip, head to Lexington Kentucky to open up a four game series with the Legends, the Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The BlueClaws will send right-hander Maximo De La Cruz (4-7, 4.31) to the mound in game one of the series. First pitch on Thursday night is at 7:05 p.m. with on-air time at 6:50 p.m. on 1310 WADB and www.blueclaws.com.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions, fireworks every Friday night home game and kids eat free Monday Nights courtesy of Shop Rite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against the New York Mets affiliate.
