Hagerstown Suns News Release
Salisbury, MD:When it rains it pours, and its pouring against the Suns pitching staff recently. On Tuesday the Delmarva Shorebirds scored more runs than any team this year versus the Suns in a 17-7 lopsided win.
Hagerstown (3-9, 45-37) has now given up 48 runs in their last five games, all losses. During their first five game losing streak of the year the Suns have scored an average of six runs a game, and three times have had 14 hits in a game, yet still lost. The 10 run loss matched the largest margin of defeat suffered by the Suns this year. The 17 runs given up were the most by suns pitching this season. Arturo Rivas hit two homeruns again for the second straight game against the Suns.
Grant Psomas went 3-4 with a homer, and Ryan Coultas hit two homeruns, and finished the game with three hits and four RBI's. Corey Coles added both from the plate and the mound. Coles was 4-5 with a run and an RBI, and switched from left field to the pitching rubber for the eighth inning.
The Suns, who have been in desparate need for pitching help, had to turn to their left fielder Corey Coles for one inning of relief. Coles threw a scoreless inning of relief, and recorded two strikeouts in doing so. Tim Worthington had been scheduled to start, yet twisted and ankle the day before while shagging fly balls during batting practice. Worthington was a late scratch, which forced the Suns to start reliever Kevin Mannix. Jose Gomez and Matt Miramontes and Mannix were all ineffective. An overused bullpen, and a 10 run deficit forced the Suns to turn to Coles to pitch the eighth.
In the seventh inning Derran Watts was ejected for arguing a borderline call, and was susequently ejected. Manager, Gene Richards came over to relieve Watts in the arguement, and also was ejected from the game. It was the first ejection for the Suns skipper this year.
Wednesday at 7:05pm the Suns send Rafael Cova to the mound to try to stop a five game losing streak against Delmarva's LHP Carlos Perez.
