
Capitanes Force Win Over Vipers

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (5-3), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, suffered a 111-109 loss to the Mexico City Capitanes (5-3) on Thursday night at the Bert Ogden Arena.
Right off the bat the game turned competitive between the Vipers and Capitanes. In the first quarter there were six lead changes and five times tied. The Vipers did not take its first lead of the game until the clock hit 5:50 and made the score 13-12. RGV maintained its lead until the clock hit 1:00 and the game reached a tie of 27-27. After that the Capitanes went on to score three points while RGV scored two points and made the game 30-24 in favor of the visiting team.
During the second quarter the lead changes continued. The game was tied three more times in the quarter with the final time being with 6:18 left and a score of 45-45. The Capitanes eventually pulled away one more time and walked into halftime with a 62-61 lead.
In the third quarter both teams continued the race to the top, but Mexico City ended up with a 91-85 lead at the end of the quarter.
Mexico City had the lead to start the quarter, but RGV tied the game 91-91 with 11:09 to go. After that the quarter was tied four more times. The final tie came when there were 52 seconds remaining on the clock and the score was set at 109-109. Trey Burke then hit the game winning shot for the Capitanes which allowed the team to walk away with a 111-109 victory.
Jarrett Culver led all scorers for the night with a double-double with 34 points and 11 rebounds. Darius Days also had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Jalen Lecque contributed 18 points followed by Joshua Obiesie with 12 points. Ray Spalding finished with 10 rebounds.
Burke and Juan Toscano-Anderson led the Capitanes with 23 points each. Alexey Borges had 19 points followed by Ethan Thompson with 13 points.
RGV will look for a rematch against the Capitanes tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. CST at the Bert Ogden Arena. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a team poster. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.rgvipers.com.
