Vipers Edge Capitanes in Fourth Quarter to Capture Victory

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (6-3), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, obtained a 110-104 victory against the Mexico City Capitanes (5-4) on Friday night at Bert Ogden Arena.

From the get-go Mexico City jumped to the top and obtained a 10-point lead with 8:17 left in the quarter and a score of 14-4. The Capitanes maintained its lead until the clock hit 3:13 and the Vipers tied it at 18-18. Mexico City then pulled away and walked off with a 30-22 lead.

In the second quarter the Vipers attempted to come back multiple times. After being down by 13 points, RGV managed to shorten that deficit to a four-point difference which sent the game into halftime with a 59-55 lead in favor of the visiting team.

With 10 minutes to go in the quarter the Vipers tied things up 59-59, but the Capitanes then pulled away and kept the lead for the remainder of the quarter. At the end of the third the game was set at 88-76.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter the Capitanes set a 15-point difference in the game which set the score at 91-76. However, the Vipers quickly turned things around and cut that lead short to two points and a score of 95-93 with 6:25 left. Mexico City continued with the lead until the clock hit 3:50 and RGV jumped from behind to take over with a score of 101-100, but the Capitanes then took a 102-101 lead. With 1:24 to go the game was tied for the final time of the night with a score of 103-103. RGV then edged the Capitanes and captured a 110-104 win.

Jarrett Culver led all scorers with 31 points. Jalen Lecque finished the night with 16 points followed by Trhae Mitchell with 15 points and Ray Spalding with 12 points. Coming off the bench was John Knight III with 10 points.

Mexico City was led by Joao Pereira with a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Alexey Borges had 18 points followed by Trey Burke with 16 points and Juan Toscano-Anderson with 14 points. Ethan Thompson had 13 points and Ruan Miranda had 10 points.

The Vipers will go on a three-game road trip starting on Wednesday, Dec. 6 as the team takes on the Oklahoma City Blue at Paycom Center at 12:00 p.m. CST. Fans may stream the game via ESPN+. For more information visit www.rgvipers.com.
