Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-17) avoided a sweep with a 5-4 extra innings win over the first-place Lincoln Saltdogs (17-11) on Sunday night at Haymarket Park. Lincoln rallied in the eighth inning to erase a 4-1 deficit, but it was the Birds who scored the game-winner in the 11th inning to improve their record in extra innings to 5-1 this season.

Jino Gonzalez and Jarrett Gardner dueled scoreless thru the first three innings of the game. The Canaries got on the scoreboard against Gardner in the fourth. The bases were loaded on singles by Cody Haerther and Beau Torbert and a walk to Trevor Lawhorn. With the bases loaded and two out, Patrick Reilly singled to score Haerther for a 1-0 lead. J.D. Reininger followed with a two run single to bring home Torbert and Lawhorn, putting the Canaries in front by three, 3-0.

Lincoln got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Josh Burrus singled and advanced to third on a hit by Albenis Machado. Phil Hawke brought Burrus home with a sacrifice fly, and after six innings the Canaries led 3-1.

In the eighth inning, Trevor Lawhorn hit his sixth home run of the season. The solo shot put the Canaries back in front by three, 4-1. However, the bottom of the inning saw the Saltdogs explode for three runs, all coming with two outs. Hawke was hit by a pitch, and Pichi Balet singled to put two men on for Rafael Alvarez. Alvarez singled to score Hawke and cut the Canaries lead to two, 4-2. Gavin Dickey followed with a ground rule double to score Balet and pull the Saltdogs within one, 4-3. With runners on second and third and two outs, Shea McFeely hit a weak dribbler up the third base line that went for an infield single, and scored Alvarez to tie the game, 4-4.

The game remained tied until the top of the 11th inning. Joe Anthonsen singled and advanced to third on a single by Tim Hutting. Cody Haerther then hit a sacrifice fly to score Anthonsen, giving the Canaries a 5-4 lead. The run scored by Anthonsen extended his streak to eight consecutive games scoring a run. Anthonsen's run also proved to be the game winner, as the Birds kept Lincoln off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the 11th to close out the 5-4 win.

Andrew Pluta (4-0) pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk to get the win for the Canaries. Former Canaries pitcher Matt Petrusek (0-1) gave up one run in three innings of work to suffer the loss for Lincoln.

The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday, August 11, when they will begin a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints. Tuesday's game will be a "Reading Program Day" at the ballpark.
