Game Gets Away From Saints in 9th in 9-1 Loss

ST. PAUL, MN (August 9, 2009) - A tightly contested game got away from the St. Paul Saints in a seven run ninth inning as they lost to the El Paso Diablos 9-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,262.

With the Saints trailing 2-1 in the top of the ninth the Diablos sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs aided by two Saints errors. The inning started when Jorge Alvarez doubled and scored when Juan Camacho's grounder went off the glove of first baseman Jason Cooper for an error. Jeff Vincent singled Camacho to third. After Vincent stole second and the infield drawn in, Mike Provencher's grounder to second baseman Alex Fonseca went off his glove allowing Camacho to score giving the Diablos a 4-1 lead. The Diablos scored five more times on a sacrifice fly from Jerry Verastegui, a two-run single by Kennard Bibbs, an RBI groundout from Alvarez and an RBI single from Juan Camacho,

The Saints wasted a tremendous starting pitching performance from Tom Buske. Pitching on three days rest Buske went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. The Diablos scored in the third inning on a solo homer to right-center from Arnoldo Ponce, his fourth of the season.

The Saints tied the game in the fourth on back-to-back two out walks to Josh Alley and Brent Krause. Jeff Eure followed with a single to center scoring Alley. It was the only run Diablos starter Josh Neitz allowed going 7.0 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Diablos took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when David Washington reached on a bloop double to center with one out. With two outs Bibbs singled him home.

The Saints have Monday off and will travel to Sioux Falls Stadium for game one of a three game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints will send RHP Todd Mathison (1-0, 0.75) to the mound against Canaries RHP Ben Moore (4-7, 5.09).
