Canaries Hand Saints First Series Loss at CHS Field in 10-3 Win on Sunday Night

ST. PAUL, MN- The Sioux Falls Canaries (32-54) wrapped up their three-game series against the St. Paul Saints, handing the North Division Champions their first series loss at home this season. The Birds; recorded a season high 21 hits, and Jason Repko finished a triple shy of the cycle in the 10-3 win over the St. Paul Saints in front of 8, 297 fans at CHS Field.

Repko got the Canaries on the board in the top half of the first inning after reaching base on a single and later scoring on a David Bergin RBI single to left-field. The Birds collected five straight hits in the inning, but scored just one run, leaving the bases loaded after Angel Chavez popped up to end the inning.

The veteran outfielder notched his second hit of the day on a lead-off home run (10) to deep left-center in the top of the third. Jerome Pena made it back-to-back home runs two pitches later, sending his sixth round-tripper of the year into the bullpen over the left-field wall. Repko made it a 3-for-4 day in the top of the sixth inning, and wrapped his day up with a one-out single in the ninth.

The Birds' wrapped up their best offensive day of the season with a three-run, eight at-bat inning in the top of the eighth. Pena reached base on a one-out walk, and later scored on a bases loaded RBI single from Steve Sulcoski. Angel Chavez and Cody Bishop both added RBI singles in the three-run inning.

Starting pitcher Ray Hanson (1-0, 4.50 ERA) made his American Association debut, and earned the win after holding the Saints to just three runs on six hits over six innings. The right-hander held the Saints scoreless over the first two innings, extending their streak of shutout baseball to 12 innings. Hanson allowed his first run in the bottom of the 3rd inning after allowing a two-out, solo home run to Alonzo Harris (10). Hanson allowed another run in the bottom of the 4th inning on a Steve Nikorak RBI double, and his final run of the night on a Nate Hanson single in the 6th.

The Canaries bullpen put the nail in the coffin over the final three innings, with Joe Van Meter, Benny Suarez, and Chase Johnson each allowing a hit in a scoreless inning of work.

Saints starting pitcher, Kramer Sneed (12-3, 3.08 ERA) suffered his third loss of the season, and second loss against the Canaries after allowing seven runs on 13 hits over five innings.

The win gave the Birds' their first series win over the Saints since June 29, 2014, and handed the Saints the first series loss at home inside CHS Field.

The Canaries return home on Monday, August 24th to battle their division rivals, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. For the first time ever, the Sioux Falls Canaries will be hosting a Food Truck Day on Monday, August 24th from 11:30 AM- 7:00 PM. Local Food Truck vendors will have their delicious food items available for purchase outside the left-field wall in parking lot A. The Canaries are encouraging everyone in Sioux Falls to come out and sample the delicious food items, and cast their vote for the top truck in town!
