Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD-The Sioux Falls Canaries are excited to announce that RHP Shawn Blackwell has been named the American Association's Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 23rd.
The League City, TX native made one start this week, facing the north division champion St. Paul Saints at CHS Field in downtown St. Paul, MN. The right-hander survived a 90 minute rain delay, and held the North Division champions scoreless in a 6-0 complete-game shutout victory.
Blackwell allowed three hits, but faced just 10 batters over his first three innings before rain showers delayed the game. He came back out for the 4th inning after play resumed and gave up a lead-off single to Ryan Lashley, but settled in after that, retiring the next 14 batters.
Blackwell put together his best performance of the season, throwing 110 pitches, 71 for strikes. He racked up a season high 10 strikeouts in the win, and did not walk a batter for the first time in 17 starts this season.
This is the sixth professional season for Blackwell, first in the American Association. He holds a 29-28 career record and a 4.25 ERA in 70 career starts. Blackwell is 3-9 in his first season with the Sioux Falls Canaries, recording 87 strikeouts in 103 innings pitched.
Blackwell is the fifth different Canaries player to receive a Pointstreak Player of the Week honor in 2015, joining teammate's Miguel Pena (Pitcher of the Week- May 24), David Bergin (Player of the Week- June 28), Brian Humphries (Player of the Week- July 12), and Jermoe Pena (Player of the Week- August 9).
The Canaries return home on Monday, August 24th to battle their division rivals, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. For the first time ever, the Sioux Falls Canaries will be hosting a Food Truck Day on Monday, August 24th from 11:30 AM- 7:00 PM.
