Canaries Fall in Doubleheader Opener, 2-0

Robstown, TX - The Sioux Falls Canaries (0-2) fell victim to a 2-0 shutout at the hands of the Coastal Bend Aviators (2-0) in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader.

The Canaries bats were held quiet during the contest as Kevin Hull pitched 6.2 shutout innings of six-hit baseball, while striking out seven Canaries batters. Tom Atlee relieved Hull in the bottom of the seventh and retired the only batter he faced to complete the shutout.

The Aviators scored right out of the gate. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, James Lofton singled to get on base. Grant Richardson followed with a double to score Lofton and give Coastal Bend an early 1-0 lead.

Richardson provided another blow to the Canaries in the fourth inning. Richardson led off the inning with his fifth homer of the season to put the Aviators ahead by a pair, 2-0.

Hull (5-3) picked up the win for Coastal Bend. Ryan Ford (2-3) took a hard luck loss for the Canaries, pitching a six-inning complete game in defeat. Atlee picked up his 10th save of the season.

The Canaries and Aviators will wrap-up their three-game series with game two of the doubleheader. The Birds will head to Pensacola for a weekend series before coming back home on Monday to host the St. Joe Blacksnakes Monday's game will be the Birds annual "Church Night" presented by the Upper Room Church. In addition to the "Church Night" theme, Monday will be another "Money Monday" presented by South Dakota Lottery, with select fans winning cash and lottery tickets for every hit by a Canaries batter.
