Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Robstown, TX - For the second year in a row, the Sioux Falls Canaries (0-3) failed to get a win in Robstown, where the Coastal Bend Aviators (3-0) defeated the Canaries in the nightcap of a doubleheader 5-2 to finish the sweep.
The Canaries loaded the bases in the second inning on a walk to Abner Arroyo, a base hit by Ben Van Iderstine, and a walk to Jake Smith. With two outs, Cameron Coughlan hit a slow roller up the first-base line. Coughlan beat the throw to the bag for a base hit scoring Arroyo. The first baseman's flip to the bag was mishandled by Aviators starting pitcher J.R. Pickens. Pickens error opened the door for Van Iderstine to score on the play. The pair of runs gave the Canaries a 2-0 lead.
Coastal Bend took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Will Lewis walked and Travis Tully singled to put runners on the corners. Brian Fryer singled to bring home Lewis, Matt Spencer singled to plate Tully, and James Lofton singled to score Fryer. The string of three consecutive RBI singles put Coastal Bend ahead, 3-2.
The Aviators added two more in the fourth. Lewis singled and Tully was hit by a pitch to set the stage with runners of first and second. Fryer and Spencer delivered RBI singles for the second straight inning to bring in a pair and put Coastal Bend ahead by three, 5-2.
