El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso out slugged Shreveport and won the contest 8-7 on Thursday night from Cohen Stadium.
The Diablos took advantage of sloppy fielding to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Albenis Machado led off the frame with a single. Machado then stole second and moved to a third on a fly out. Two batters later, Juan Camacho bounced a ball up the middle which the short stop Wade Robinson corralled, but his throw to the first base bag was wide, allowing Machado to score on the error.
Shreveport took the lead in the top of the fourth. Tommy Bryant ripped a one out double to left field which scored Chad Gambill and Justin Humprhies for the 2-1 lead. The Sports made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth on a run-scoring single from Chad Gambill.
The Diablos had an explosive bottom of the fifth inning, plating five runners on five hits. Jorge Alvarez, Juan Camacho, Matt Kent and Jordan Belcher each had run-scoring singles for the Diablos as they chased starter Matt Yeatman from the game.
Shreveport scored two in the top of the sixth. Jack Joffrion poked a one-out single through the right side. Justin Knoff then left the game as Mike Cervera replaced him. Deacon Burns then smacked a grounder down the third base line which Camacho fielded, but his throw to second was late getting two runners aboard. Brandon Hudson would come through with an RBI single. One batter later, Juan Ventura would pick up a sac-fly cutting the lead to 6-5.
The Diablos would extend the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Jorge Alvarez had another run-scoring single and Juan Camacho picked up a sacrifice fly in the frame.
Shreveport crept back scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jack Joffrion picked up a one out walk. Deacon Burns advanced Joffrion to third on a double. Joffrion would score on a ground out. Juan Ventura would score Burns on a single through the right side as the score was just 8-7 going into the top of the ninth.
Ned Darley picked up his 13th save with a scoreless ninth inning to hold off Shreveport.
Justin Knoff (3-0) threw five and a third innings allowing four earned runs off 10 hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Matt Yeatman (5-2) went four and two thirds allowing four earned runs off nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Diablos will open up a three-game home series against Fort Worth on Friday night at 7:05 PM. Andy Torres will toss against Lee Gwaltney in the opener. The game will be on ESPN Radio 1380 AM and streamed at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
