Campbell And Johnson's Eight Combined Points Not Enough To Top Gladiators
October 23, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - Trent Campbell and Keith Johnson each scored four points and Nikita Kashirsky added three as the South Carolina Stingrays fell to the Gwinnett Gladiators 6-5 in the shootout.
Gwinnet (3-1-0-0) started the scoring when Adam Berti earned his first goal of the year from Tom Zanoski at 4:43 of the first period. Scott Mifsud added a tally at 6:35 from Brad Schell to give the Gladiators a two goal lead. Pat Galivan capped the first period scoring with a blast that beat Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford at 14:28 from Mifsud and Schell.
The Stingrays (1-1-1-1) turned their fortunes around in the second period as Trent Campbell converted on the Stingrays first power-play opportunity beating Gwinnett goaltender Jon Horrell 59 seconds into the period. Campbell was assisted by Keith Johnson and Zach Tarkir. Johnson added a goal of his own at 5:50 from Campbell and Nikita Kashirsky. The Gladiators briefly dampened the mood with a power-play goal of their own at 7:35 from Drew Paris with help from Mifsud and Schell. Kashirsky turned the momentum back around 19 seconds later with a goal from Johnson and Campbell at 7:54. Matt Fornataro scored his first goal in a Stingrays uniform on the power play to complete the comeback and tie the game at four at 19:03. Fornataro's goal was helped along by Gregg Johnson and Josh Godfrey.
Kashirsky gave the Stingrays their first lead of the game 3:35 into the third period on a perfect play setup by Campbell and Keith Johnson. Gwinnett pulled even at five with a goal from Tim Miller as a result of a goalmouth scramble in front of Ford. Matt Caruana and Jamie Fritsch acquired the assists. The teams finished in a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation. The Stingrays controlled all of the offense in the extra frame, but couldn't solve Horrell. A shootout was needed to decide the winner. After the first three shooters failed to score on penalty shots, Schell beat Ford high blocker-side to give the Gladiators the lead. Schell's goal was all that was needed as Horrell stopped the following two Stingrays attempts to preserve the win. Horrell finished the night stopping 35 of 40 Stingrays shots while Todd Ford put aside 24 of 29 Gladiator opportunities.
The Stingrays return to the ice tomorrow as they battle the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow night's game marks the end of a five-game home stand for the Stingrays before heading to Florida next week.
