Salmon Kings Shutout Condors
October 23, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Friday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met in the second game of a three-game set at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Glenn Fisher in net while the Condors countered with Justin Pogge.
The Salmon Kings broke the scoreless tie at the 9:46 mark of the opening period when off a face-off Captain Wes Goldie took a feed from Olivier Filion and made a nice backhand move on Pogge. Goldie's shot rang off the crossbar over Pogge's blocker and managed to bank down off the goaltender's pad into the net. The tally was Goldie's second goal of the season, and proved to be the lone marker in a first period full of strong goaltending and physical play.
Goldie doubled the Salmon Kings' lead at the 14:16 mark of the middle period with his second goal of the game. Olivier Filion took control of the puck on some physical board play in the right wing corner and squirted the puck out to Goldie who caught Pogge out of position with a cross-body shot that eluded the goaltender's glove. Just 14 seconds later at 14:30 mark, Andy Brandt took a pass from Adam Taylor near the right wing goal line and beat Pogge with a quick shot that trickled through the goaltender's pads and into the back of the net. Brandt's goal was his first of the season, and first as a Salmon King. With a minute and a half left in the second period, Wes Goldie was denied his hat-trick on a breakaway that Pogge tipped into the air with his glove. The Salmon Kings would take their 3-0 lead into the second intermission.
The third period would be highlighted by a two minute 5-on-3 advantage for the Condors who could not beat the Salmon Kings' penalty-kill unit or Fisher. Victoria's goaltender made 14 third-period saves to earn his first shutout as a Salmon King and the King's first win of the season. Salmon Kings 3 Condors 0.
The Victoria finished 0/1 0.0% on the powerplay while Bakersfield went 0/5 0.0%. The Condors outshot the Salmon Kings 36-35.
