October 23, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Gwinnett got the scoring started early once again in this game, as Tom Zanoski picked off a clearing attempt by Stingray goaltender Todd Ford and connected on a pass to Adam Berti. Berti one-timed the puck into the top right corner putting the Gladiators up 1-0.
Less than two minutes later, at the 6:35 mark, Scott Mifsud would put Gwinnett up 2-0. Mifsud got a feed from Brad Schell and tapped the puck off the glove of Ford and into the back of the net.
South Carolina picked up their intensity and got a boost from a fight between Spencer Carbery and Tim Miller. However, Emergency Backup Jon Horrell would keep the Stingrays off the board.
The Gladiators added their third goal of the period at the 14:28 mark, with Patrick Galivan slamming home a rebound on the Powerplay. Drew Paris blasted a shot on goal that was deflected by Brad Schell, and caused Ford some trouble with the rebound. Scott Mifsud had a whack at the rebound, but Galivan circled around and was able to corral a bouncing puck and put it home.
Gwinnett took a 3 goal lead into the 2nd period, but South Carolina quickly came storming back. Trent Campbell found the back of the net on the powerplay just 59 seconds into the period. That was the first of many to come, as less than 5 minutes later, Keith Johnson put home a goal on a nice cross-crease pass from Campbell. Johnson got a quick deflection on net, and just managed to slide the puck past Horrell.
Gwinnett regained their two goal lead when Drew Paris was able to blast a one timer home from the top of the slot. Brad Schell was able to work the puck around the wall to Scott Mifsud., and Mifsud found Paris for the goal.
The scoring in the second period didn't end there, as the Stingrays would add two more goals to even up the score by the end of the second period. Getting goals for South Carolina were Nikita Kashirsky and Matt Fornataro.
The third period opened up with the same fireworks, as 3:35 into the third, Kashirsky would get his second goal of the night. A great backdoor pass from Trent Campbell found Kashirsky wide open on the right side of the net for the easy goal.
Tim Miller tied it up for Gwinnett after a mad scramble in front of the net. With 8:20 left in the third, Miller was able to find the handle on a bouncing puck and tie the game at 5.
The game would eventually work its way to a shootout, with Brad Schell collecting the only goal scored by either of the two teams.
The Gladiators improve to 3-1-0-0 and South Carolina picked up a point, now at 1-1-1-1.
