Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â The Manchester Monarchs spotted the Portland Pirates the first goal, and then scored the next five with a flurry of activity while extending their season-best unbeaten streak to five games on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
Center Michael Cammalleri made an impressive home debut in front of the frenzied sellout crowd of 9,916 fans, netting his first two goals of the season in the Monarchs 5-1 victory over the Pirates. Right wing John Tripp chipped in with one goal and two assists as the Monarchs improved to 4-0-1-0 in their last five contests. Left wing Ryan Flinn and center Steve Kelly also had goals for the Monarchs, who moved into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division with the victory.
Portland center Trent Whitfield was credited with the Pirates goal, scored on a second attempt at right side of the net at 7:06. Whitfield collected his fourth after gathering in his own miss from behind the net. Wings Colin Forbes and Andrej Podkonicky assisted on the play.
Cammalleri took left wing Noah Clarke's centering feed in the slot and blasted it by goaltender Maxime Ouellet to tie the game at 11:48. The goal was Cammalleri's first this season. The Los Angeles Kings assigned the second year pro to the Monarchs on Friday.
Tripp also earned an assist on Cammalleri's tally, his first of three points in the opening stanza. Tripp later in the period assisted on Flinn's second of the season. Flinn completed a 3-on-1 rush into the Pirates zone by hammering his slap shot past Ouellet's glove at 12:56. Tripp drew the defenseman to him in the right circle, and then located Flinn wide-open in the slot.
Tripp's power play goal at 19:18 of the first period made it 3-1 as he deposited his backhander into the net after defenseman Tomas Zizka had his shot deflect of the back of former Monarchs defenseman Mike Pudlick. Cammalleri earned the second assist on the play.
The Monarchs quickly erased any chance of a Pirates comeback early in the third period when Cammalleri and Kelly scored at 59 seconds and 2:11 respectively. Defenseman Bryan Muir collected an assist on the Cammalleri goal. Right wing Pavel Rosa and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov shared assists on the Kelly marker.
The third period had a combined 47 minutes in penalties, including 36 from the home team as Rullier and Flinn were each involved in fisticuffs. Rullier left the ice with a standing ovation from the crowd after squaring off with center Darcy Verot at 14:53. Flinn was charged with 27 minutes in penalties, including a game misconduct and a 10-minute misconduct as the final buzzer sounded.
The Monarchs close week five of the AHL schedule when they host the Albany River Rats at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday, November 9 at 4:05p.m. The first 3,000 kids 12 and under at Sunday's game will receive a free Monarchs practice jersey courtesy of Jiffy Lube.
