Springfield Falcons News Release
Hartford, CT â Wolf Pack forward Ken Gernander scored with 7:28 remaining in the third period to boost Hartford to a 4-3 win over the Springfield Falcons at the Hartford Civic Center on Saturday evening. Falcons rookie left wing Mike Stutzel tallied a pair of power-play goals and goaltender David LeNeveu made 40 saves in the loss. Center Chris Ferraro registered two assists for Springfield. Wolf Pack left wing Garth Murray net his first two goals of the season and assisted on Gernander's game-winner.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the see-saw battle with goals by center Jeff Taffe and Stutzel 32 seconds apart early in the second period. Taffe snapped a shot into the upper corner of the net from the top of the left wing face-off circle while being dragged down by a Hartford defender at 3:38 of the frame. Following a hooking penalty issued to Murray, Stutzel scored when a shot from Peter Ferraro deflected off the first-year forward as he went to the net at 4:10.
The Wolf Pack took advantage of a Falcons turnover to knot the contest on a shorthanded goal with 1:14 remaining in the period. Murray potted the goal after receiving a feed from the left wing boards from rookie Dominic Moore.
Hartford capitalized on a roughing penalty assessed to Taffe to take a 3-2 lead 1:42 into the third period. On the play, Wolf Pack left wing Chad Wiseman was credited with his team-leading fifth goal of the season when a slap shot from defenseman Lawrence Nycholat ricocheted through traffic and into the net.
Stutzel collected his second marker of the night with a man-advantage marker from the top of the crease at 7:29 to again tie the contest.
However, Gernander was able to get open in the low slot long enough to score the game-winner after receiving a centering feed from Murray 5:03 later.
Murray scored his first goal of the season with the lone marker of the opening period.
Hartford outshot the Falcons, 44-19, putting the most shots on goal by a Springfield opponent this season.
The Falcons travel to Portland to face the Pirates in a 4:05 pm contest on Sunday. Listen to Falcons broadcaster Marc Shelanski's call of the action live on The ZONE â Sports Radio 640.
