South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons in the Lowcountry and proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), announced today that forward Brett Cameron has been named the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for February.
Cameron, 25, posted 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 13 games last month. His strong month helped the Stingrays to a 10-2-1-0 record during February. Cameron collected a point in nine straight games from February 5-20, and posted points in 10 games during the month.
Cameron collected the game-winning goal in the Stingrays 4-3 overtime victory at Greenville on February 20, helping South Carolina to its first overtime win of the season. He had three multi-point games in February.
Cameron has not only been one of the Stingrays top players, but one of the top rookies in the ECHL. He is tied for the team lead in goals with 19, and is second in points with 44. He is tied for second among ECHL rookies in goals while ranking seventh among first-year players in points.
A native of Spruce Grove, Alberta, Cameron returned to the Stingrays after briefly skating with the club last season at the conclusion of his NCAA career. With the Stingrays, he made an immediate impact, tallying four points (three goals, one assist) in three games while adding one assist in five games with Adirondack of the American?Hockey League last year. Prior to turning pro, Cameron played NCAA Hockey at the University of Alaska-Anchorage where he recorded 65 points (26 goals, 39 assists) in 143 career games for the Seawolves.
Cameron is the second Stingray to earn Rookie of the Month honors this season. Goaltender Vitek Vanecek claimed the honor in November.
