Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - Former Kalamazoo Wings forward Derek Ryan became the fifth K-Wing alumnus to make his National Hockey League debut this season when he appeared with the Carolina Hurricanes against the New Jersey Devils last night at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Ryan played with Kalamazoo during the 2006-07 season in the United Hockey League after his junior career with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League concluded. Ryan appeared in three regular season games with the Wings, notching two assists. In 13 playoff games with Kalamazoo that season, Ryan had four goals and an assist, along with eight penalty minutes.
A native of Spokane, Washington, Ryan played four seasons with the University of Alberta before heading overseas. The 5-foot-10 centerman spent three seasons in Austria before heading to Sweden in 2014-15.
Ryan returned to the states in the 2015-16 season with the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League, and appeared in 55 games, scoring 17 goals and adding 25 assists before being called up to the NHL by the Hurricanes.
In his debut last night, Ryan logged 14:38 of ice time and notched a power play goal.
Ryan joins Jordan Binnington (St. Louis), Yanni Gourde (Tampa Bay), Alex Friesen (Vancouver) and Alex Grenier (Vancouver), as former Wings to make their NHL debuts this season.
