Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - Atley Calvert is finding success by doing the little things right.

"He exemplifies how we want to play," Moose Jaw Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary.

The 19-year-old Moose Jaw product currently leads the Warriors with 22 goals this season after scoring five in three games last week.

His 22 goals and 41 points are already career highs, set in 27 less games than last season when he posted 15 goals and 40 points in 65 games.

"I'm just trying to do my thing, I try to get a little better every day," Calvert said.

The process is working as Calvert was named WHL Player of the Week after posting five goals and eight points in three games last week. His eight points led all WHL skaters.

Calvert is currently riding a seven-game point streak and has multiple points in three of his last four games.

"That's because of our team, we have a really good group, I play with a lot of really good players, so it feels good, obviously, but the big wins feel better," he said.

O'Leary said Calvert is a coach's dream.

"We talk about our DNA and what we have to do to be successful and that's Atley Calvert," he said. "He wins races, he wins battles and right now he's finish off on opportunities.

"He leads by example and he leads off the ice."

Both of Calvert's goals during the Warriors' big 6-2 win over the Canadian Hockey League's top-ranked Seattle Thunderbirds came right on top of the crease.

Calvert said that's his game.

"I always try to play beneath the circles, I like to go to the net and sometimes there's a couple of pucks laying around there, so it's always nice to find those and especially when they're going in," he said.

After already topping his career highs for goals and points, Calvert said his goals for the rest of the season are focused on team success.

"We all want to go on a deep run, so that's the biggest thing on all of our minds," he said. "The personal success is to the side for the team success."

Calvert and the Warriors have a busy week ahead as they will play four games in five nights, starting on Tuesday in Edmonton.

The Warriors' next home game is on Friday when the Portland Winterhawks come to the Hangar.
