Calvert Key for Warriors at Both Ends of the Ice

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Atley Calvert's role with the Moose Jaw Warriors keeps growing and he's taking full advantage of the opportunity.

Calvert posted his first Western Hockey League hat trick in the Warriors' 4-1 win over Regina on Saturday night.

"It was pretty cool, the building was pretty packed and most importantly, we got the win, so that was even better," Calvert said after practice on Monday.

The Moose Jaw product has grown into a key cog for the Warriors at both ends of the ice.

Calvert usually draws the task with playing against the oppositions' first line, which was the case on Saturday when his line was tasked with shutting down Pats forward Connor Bedard, who finished with no points and a minus-three rating in the loss.

"I just tried to keep it simple," Calvert said. "I try to make sure that I'm always on the right side of the puck and I tried to provide energy to our team.

"I like to play the other team's best players and I love the competition."

Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said the coaching staff doesn't think twice about matching up Calvert's line with the best players on the opposition.

"That's something that we don't hesitate with," O'Leary said. "His line with Riley Niven and Cordel Larson, they're doing a heck of a job, they're hard to play against, but we know that they can contribute offensively as well."

After being past over in the WHL Bantam Draft, Calvert was listed by his hometown team.

Over 78 games in the WHL, he has 13 goals and 40 points. Calvert has 10 goals and 28 points in 41 games this season, while also a plus-four rating and winning over 50 per cent of his face-offs.

O'Leary said Calvert plays an honest game.

"He's on the right side of pucks, he doesn't cheat the play," he said. "We know what we're going to get every night from Atley."

Calvert said he's focused on being the best player he can be at both ends of the ice.

"I feel like my defensive zone has definitely improved and I enjoy the 200-foot game," he said.

Five of Calvert's 10 goals this season have came in the past three games, which are all wins for the Warriors, who have won a season-high six straight games.

Calvert said the Warriors are having a lot of fun as a team right now.

"I just feel like we've got better and better each game in our structure and as we wear teams down, we play heavy and hard," he said.

The Warriors are off until Friday when they travel to Swift Current to face-off with the Broncos.
