August 2, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
The Nashville Sounds (54-55) beat the Fresno Grizzlies (63-47) 2-1 on a walk-off bunt single Thursday night from First Tennessee Park. With the loss, Fresno dropped their eight series in 28 chances. They also fell to 48-14 when scoring first (26-10 on the road), 15-19 in one-run affairs and 0-6 all-time at First Tennessee Park. The Grizzlies staff punched out 13 hitters on the evening, raising their PCL-best total to 1,057.
Fresno mustered a 1-0 lead in the visitor's half of the fourth. A leadoff double by Jack Mayfield (2-for-4) ended in a run when Yordan Alvarez bounced into a fielder's choice. During the frame, AJ Reed (1-for-2) reached on an infield single, expanding his current team-high hit streak to eight games. That is also Reed's season-long hit streak.
Nashville knotted the score at one in the bottom of the eighth when Sheldon Neuse popped up into a fielder's choice. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Boog Powell (2-for-5) slashed a bunt in between first and second, inching the game-winning run across the plate. Slinger Brendan McCurry (5-6) took the defeat from the walk-off hit.
Grizzlies starter Rogelio Armenteros (no-decision) lasted five scoreless innings. He was charged with four hits, four walks and six strikeouts. In 96 frames, he has fanned 106 batters. Fresno is 23-5 in games pitched by Armenteros since his call-up on July 3, 2017 (22-5 in starts). Reliever Dean Deetz notched four punchouts in two shutout innings. In 15 Triple-A frames, he has whiffed 28 hitters and has not allowed an earned run.
Sounds starter James Naile (no-decision) hurled six innings of one-run ball. He scattered three hits and two free passes while striking out three. Liam Hendriks secured his third win of the year after one and one-third frames.
Both squads finish the set with game three Friday evening from Nashville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PT. Grizzlies righty Brady Rodgers (1-1, 7.24) and Sounds RHP Frankie Montas (2-5, 3.91) are the probable matchup.
