May 5, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC -Desmond Jennings RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning capped the Bulls' comeback as Durham took a 4-3 win over the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The win puts the Bulls back into first place in the South Division of the International League.

With the score tied at 3-3, Josh Wilkie came on in the ninth inning for the Chiefs and walked the first hitter he faced in Bulls catcher Robinson Chirinos. Omar Luna pinch-ran for Chirinos and Ray Olmedo delivered a broken bat single to right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jennings came through in the clutch with an RBI single to center field to give the Bulls the victory.

Jennings came to the plate in the eighth inning with his team trailing 3-1 and hit a leadoff double off of Syracuse reliever Adam Carr. Justin Ruggiano followed with a two-run home run to right field tying the game at three. The home run was the fifth on the season for Ruggiano and his first since April 19 against Gwinnett.

Tom Milone got a no decision for the Chiefs despite going seven innings allowing just four hits and one run while striking out 11. Wilkie (0-1) picked up the loss.

Edgar Gonzalez also earned a quality start for the Bulls going six innings and surrendering three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out six. JP Howell, Ryan Reid, and Cory Wade (1-0) each worked a scoreless inning out of the pen for Durham. The three relievers combined to allow one hit and two walks while striking out four.

Durham will continue its four game series at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park against Syracuse at 7:05 p.m. on Friday May 6 when they will send ace Alex Cobb (3-0 2.05) to the mound against the Chiefs Craig Stammen (1-1 3.20). The game can be heard on 620 the Buzz, and tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com .
