Columbus Clippers News Release
Perfect mix... Despite having one of the youngest teams in the International League, the Clippers have eleven major leaguers on their current roster.
Hard work pays off... The Clippers have had three first round draft choices on our roster this season: pitcher Alex White (2009), third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall (2008) and LHP David Huff (2006). Reliever Josh Judy, on the other hand, was drafted by the Indians in 34th round of the 2007 draft and RHP Frank Herrmann and OF Jerad Head were signed as non-drafted free agents.
Hitting Coach Lee May Jr. was the first round draft choice of the Mets in 1986, before Ezequiel Carrera, Jason Kipnis, Cord Phelps and Lonnie Chisenhall were born.
Brains and Brawn... Frank Herrmann is a graduate of Harvard and Cord Phelps had a 4.83 GPA to get into Stanford!
Columbus connection... Ohio State quarterback Joe Bauserman was drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 baseball draft, two players ahead of former Clipper Colin Ballister and ten playersahead of catcher Lou Marson. Bauserman signed a baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates and played three seasons (Gulf Coast, Williamsport, Hickory) for that organization. Baseball America rated him as having the best changeup in the Pirates' farm system.
Natural leader... Manager Mike Sarbaugh was a middle school teacher in the off season. Mike has won a championship at every minor league level in his career.
At the Movies... A surprising number of former Columbus players have appeared in Hollywood movies over the past century. They include Ernie Orsatti, who was the stand in stunt man for silent movie star Buster Keaton. Wahoo Sam Crawford appeared in Buster Keaton's COLLEGE (1927), John Romonosky in STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND (1955), Kelly Heath was in BULL DURHAM (1988), Phil Lombardi in TALENT FOR THE GAME (1991), Derek Jeter in ANGER MANAGEMENT (2003), to name a few players.
Former Clippers pitcher Scott Patterson has appeared in a few movies before landing the role of Luke Danes in the television show THE GILMORE GIRLS.
The movie with the most Clippers appearing in it was FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME (1999) that included Dave Eiland, Donzell McDonald, Scott Prose, Chris Ashby, Billy Masse, Mike Buddie and Ricky Ledee. That same year the movie A LITTLE INSIDE was shot at Cooper Stadium and many of our front office and fans can be seen throughout the film.
