IL1 Gwinnett Stripers

G-Braves Start Trip with Walk-Off Loss

May 5, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Gwinnett Braves lost to the Rochester Red Wings 3-2 in walk-off fashion on Thursday night in Rochester, N.Y. G-Braves starting pitching once again held the fort for most of the game but, in an unsettling recent trend, the April sturdiness of the bullpen has unraveled in early May. Gwinnett (14-12) has lost seven of their last eight games, and drops into second place by a half game in the International League South for the first time since April 20th. Rochester (11-14) is in fourth place in the IL North.

It Was Over When: In a pitching duel that came down to the wire, it was Gwinnett's bullpen that blinked first. After the G-Braves tied the game at 2-2 in the 6th inning, the contest remained that way until the bottom of the 9th inning. Reliever Anthony Varvaro came on and walked the inning's first batter. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Varvaro gave up the game winning single to Rochester SS Ray Chang.

Braves Beat: On the Mound: LHP Mike Minor started for Gwinnett and went 7.0 IP, yielding 2 R/ER on 6 hits with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts in a no decision. Varvaro (0-4) went just 0.1 IP and allowed a R/ER on 2 walks in the loss. At the plate: First baseman Mauro Gomez went 2-for-4 with a HR and 2 RBI to lead the offense. Both 2B Ed Lucas and RF Matt Young each went 2-for-4.

The Opposition: On the Mound: Rochester RHP Anthony Swarzak went 5.1 IP, allowing 2 R/ER on 7 hits without a walk and 6 strikeouts. RHP Anthony Slama (1-1) pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his first win. At the Plate: Left fielder Toby Gardenhire, son of Minnesota Twins manager Ron, went 1-for-2 with a HR and RBI. Chang, the hero, finished 2-for-4 with the game winning run knocked in.

On Deck: The G-Braves take on Rochester in upstate N.Y. for game two of their four game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett sends out RHP Rodrigo Lopez (4-0, 1.67 ERA) against Red Wings RHP Eric Hacker (1-0, 0.00 ERA). The game can be heard on the radio at WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
