Columbus Clippers News Release

Did you know that there have been only four members of the Hall of Fame to go back to the minors to manage after their induction at Cooperstown' (Ryne Sandberg, Mike Schmidt, Gary Carter and Rogers Hornsby.) Hornsby, Carter and Sandberg have won pennants or division championships as HOF minor league managers.

Since the Hall of Fame opened there has been other future Hall of Famers that managed in the minors before their inductions. They include Jim Bunning, Phil Niekro, Early Wynn, Bucky Harris, Jimmy Foxx. Warren Spahn, Frank Robinson, Hoyt Wilhelm, Burleigh Grimes, Joe Gordon, Duke Snider, Enos Slaughter and Bob Lemon.

Technically, you could include Early Wynn on the list of four. He was managing his only season in the minors the summer he was inducted but never managed after that season. Also, Hoyt Wilhelm was a pitching coach in the Yankees organization in Single-A for many years after he was enshrined.

Jimmy Foxx and Phil Niekro also managed professional women's baseball teams after their playing careers. Foxx managed the Ft. Wayne Daisies in 1952 and Niekro skippered the Colorado Silver Bullets for three seasons in the mid-90's. Foxx took the Daisies to the playoffs where they were defeated by the Rockford Peaches.

The Champs are back in town tonight at 7:05 PM to extend their 13 game winning streak. The Clippers record is 16 games in 1979. The Clippers record of 21-5 is the best in professional baseball!
