Bulls Hold off Knights 6-5
June 30, 2022 - International League (IL)
Durham Bulls News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Durham starting pitcher Tommy Romero fired six scoreless frames, while first baseman Tristan Gray, third baseman Curtis Mead and left fielder Jim Haley all homered in the Bulls' 6-5 win over the Charlotte Knights on Thursday evening at Truist Field.
After Mead mashed a solo shot in the second, RF Miles Mastrobuoni made it a two-run advantage with an RBI single in the third. Haley would then go deep with a solo blast in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0 prior to Mastrobuoni driving in his second run of the evening with a run-scoring double in the seventh.
After Charlotte ended the Bulls' shutout hopes with a single tally in the seventh, Gray crushed a two-run blast to left to make it 6-1. After narrowing their deficit to 6-4 in the eighth, the Knights scored another run in the ninth to make it a one-run game, however Durham was able to hold off Charlotte to preserve the win.
Mastrobuoni (2-4, 2 RBI, BB) was the lone Bulls batter to record a multi-hit effort as eight of nine hitters in the Durham order collected at least one knock. Gray's big fly was his team-leading 17th of the year, which also ranks him third in the International League.
Romero (6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO) earned the win after firing six shutout frames, adding five strikeouts, while righty Chris Muller notched his second save. Knights southpaw Kyle Kubat (4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) suffered the defeat.
The two teams are scheduled to continue their six-game series on Thursday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 7:04pm. RHP Luis Patino is anticipated to get the nod for Durham as part of his MLB Rehab Assignment and be opposed by RHP Davis Martin.
Following their series in Charlotte, Durham returns home on Monday, July 4 to start a six-game series against the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch of that contest is set for 6:35pm.
Tickets for that game and all remaining 2022 home dates can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com/tickets.
