Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Bulls evened the series with the IronPigs with a 6-5 victory at Coca-Cola Park. The Bulls and IronPigs will play a rubber match tomorrow at 7:05.
Durham opened the scoring the top of the first against Tom Eshelman (2-12); the Bulls took advantage of an unearned run to make it 1-0. Eshelman settled in and kept the Bulls off the scoreboard through the next two frames.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the second, Zach Green homered for the second straight night; this time to put the IronPigs in the lead. After working a pair of walks against Andrew Moore (6-6), Green sent one deep over the left-field fence to make it 3-1.
Durham responded in the top of the fourth against Eshelman and tied the game at three. Doubles by Nathaniel Lowe and Nick Ciuffo tied the game as they rain came down at Coca-Cola Park.
Two innings later, Durham retook the lead scoring three two-out runs in the sixth. Adam Moore broke the tie with a double and Micah Johnson hit a pinch-hit single to make it 6-3.
Eshelman was lifted after the single and allowed six-runs, five earned over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and allowed eight hits in the outing. Mark Leiter Jr was first out of the pen for the Pigs and struck out three in 1 1/3 innings and stranded a leadoff double in the seventh to keep the deficit at three.
The Lehigh Valley offense chipped away against the Durham bullpen in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff single by Jesmuel Valentin and a walk to Aaron Altherr, Mitch Walding singled through the hole on the right side to make it 6-4. One batter later, Joey Meneses brought Altherr home on a sacrifice fly to put the Pigs within one.
Danny Ortiz extended his hitting streak to nine games with a one out double in the ninth inning to put the tying run scoring position. Ian Gibaut got the next two batters in the inning to keep Lehigh Valley off the board and secure the win for Durham.
Wednesday will be Strike Out Cancer Night at Coca-Cola Park as the team will attempt to raise more than $10,000 for local non-profits.
