Bullpen Shines as Herd Blanks Wings, 5-0

Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons picked up their first shutout of the season on Tuesday night in Rochester, NY and it was their bullpen that did the heavy lifting.
Zach Jackson, Kirby Snead and Justin Shafer combined to retire 15 of the final 18 batters of a 5-0 blanking of the Red Wings from Frontier Field.
The bullpen was nearly perfect in protecting an early 2-0 Bisons advantage. Jackson was the first one to take the hill in relief of starter Shawn Morimando and he retired all six batters he faced. With a pair of punchouts and 14 of his 20 pitches for strikes, the righty earned his second victory of the season.
Snead then came in for a pair of scoreless innings, allowing just a two-out double to first baseman Randy Cesar in the bottom of the eighth. That threat lasted just one pitch as the southpaw got catcher Tomas Telis to foul out on his next offering.
Shafer did allow back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the ninth after the Bisons had extended their lead to 5-0. However, the veteran needed just seven pitches to retire the next three batters and preserve the shutout.
Rochester left 11 men on base but eight of those were over the first four innings as Morimando pitched himself in and out of trouble. The starter walked five, but also struck out five with three of the Ks ending rallies.
The Bisons scored the only run they would need in the second inning without needing a hit. Reese McGuire, Alen Hanson and Jordan Patterson drew consecutive one-out walks with the Bisons' backstop scoring on Teoscar Hernandez's sacrifice fly.
Cavan Biggio got himself around in the sixth on a walk, and Anthony Alford infield single, a steal of third and a wild pitch. Buffalo then blew the game open with four consecutive two-out hits in the ninth inning. Patterson's two-run double past the left fielder proved to be the biggest hit of the game.
Game two of the three-game series is Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. with Jacob Waguespack scheduled to pitch for the Bisons.
