Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo, OH - The Toledo Mud Hens took an early lead but came up short as division rival Columbus Clippers claimed a 5-2 win on Tuesday evening at Huntington Park.
Jake Rogers launched his second home run in a Mud Hens (15-26) jersey in the loss to the Clippers (25-17) where Toledo recorded nine hits to Columbus' seven.
Jacob Robson hit the first pitch of the game on a line to center field and wound up on second base. Robson moved to third on a groundout and scored as Harold Castro singled up the middle. Willi Castro was then hit by a pitch giving Toledo runners on first and second. Each runner moved up a bag as Columbus' starter Shao-Ching Chiang threw a wild pitch, but the Mud Hens left two stranded in the first while taking a 1-0 lead.
LHP Tyler Alexander got the start for Toledo and sent two Clippers back to the dugout on strikes in the first inning after surrendering a walk and stolen base. After three innings, Alexander had fanned six batters, not allowing a hit the first time through the order.
Trayce Thompson got Columbus on the board in the fourth inning with a two-run home run giving the Clippers a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Adam Rosales began the inning with a solo home run just over the fence in left field extending the lead for Columbus to two.
RHP Eduardo Jimenez came on in the sixth inning for the Mud Hens. Exiting was Alexander who allowed three earned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven.
Rogers launched his second home run as a Mud Hen in the sixth inning to bring Toledo within a run. Danny Woodrow followed with a double off the tall wall in right field to keep the two-out rally alive.
Jimenez exited after delivering two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and retiring three on strikes as RHP Zac Houston came on in the eighth. After retiring the first two Clippers he faced, Houston allowed a double to Brandon Barnes and then walked Bobby Bradley. Thompson then earned another RBI with a single to right field allowing Barnes to score. On a wild pitch Bradley moved to third giving Columbus runners on first and third with two outs. Mike Papi then beat out an infield hit that allowed Bradley to score and increased the oppositions lead to 5-2.
The Clippers brought in southpaw Josh D. Smith to face the Mud Hens in the ninth. Due up was left-handed hitting Woodrow and Robson with switch-hitting Jeimer Candelario third. Smith made quick work retiring the side in order as Columbus claimed the 5-2 victory.
