Bullpen Falters in Back and Forth Battle with Indians

August 30, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Coming off a big walk off win on Saturday night, the Mud Hens looked to make it two in a row on Sunday at Fifth Third Field. Taking the ball for the home team was southpaw Kyle Lobstein as he continued his rehab assignment on the road back to the Detroit Tigers' rotation. Taking the mound for the first place Indians was Brad Lincoln who was looking to earn his seventh win of the season.

The Toledo offense got things off to a quick start at the Hen house off Lincoln in the second when Bryan Holaday doubled home Jefry Marte to take a 1-0 lead. Utility man Corey Jones kept things going in the second as his sharp single to right brought around Dean Green. The Hens sent Indy into the second carrying a demanding 3-0 lead. However, the Indians potent lineup has led them into first for a reason as they rallied in the fourth to put up a three spot of their own. The half inning was highlighted by a home run from Mud Hens' killer Willy Garcia, his tenth of the season.

Lobstein's day ended in the fifth after the lefty surrendered the go ahead run on a Travis Snider sac fly putting the Indians up 4-3. Lobstein left the game after 6.2 innings surrendering four runs on four hits with six punchouts. After three rehab starts in the Mud Hens rotation the southpaw looks to make a late season return to the struggling Tigers' pitching staff. The back and forth battle of the offenses continued in the bottom of the seventh for the home team. Bryan Holaday kicked off the frame with a single followed by a hit by pitch from Trayvon Robinson. With two runners on, Alexi Casilla hit a ringing double to the outfield scoring both Hens and taking back the lead once again off Indy reliever Frank Herman.

Headed to the eighth, Larry Parrish put his faith in lefty reliever Ian Krol to settle down the game as he has done all season long. But, after two men reached base safely off Krol Willy Garcia stepped up to the plate once again with the tying and go ahead runs on base. Garcia came through sending a Krol fastball back up the middle for a base hit scoring both runners and taking a late inning one run lead. The right handed swinging Garcia finished the night 2-4 at the plate with five runs batted in.

The score stood after the eighth as the Hens went down quietly in the ninth and the loss was tagged to Ian Krol, his first of the season.

Toledo is back in action on Monday as the Louisville Bats come to town for a three game set, first pitch is slated for 6:30 PM.
