Charlotte Knights News Release

(DURHAM, NC) - Jason Coats homered and drove in both of Charlotte's runs, but the Durham Bulls beat the Charlotte Knights on Sunday by a score of 4-2 in the finale of their four-game series from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The loss pushed the Knights to 4.5 games back of first place Norfolk in the International League South Division standings. Norfolk beat Gwinnett 4-3.

After beginning the 2015 season with Double-A Birmingham, Coats was promoted to the Knights on April 23 after posting a .340 batting average with nine doubles and two RBIs over 12 games with the Barons. A 29th round selection of the Chicago White Sox in the 2012 draft out of TCU, Coats has impressed with the Knights during his rookie season in Triple-A. On Sunday, he drove in Charlotte's first run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single. Five innings later, he launched his 17th home run of the season.

Overall in 2015 with the Knights in 114 games, Coats is hitting .267 with 17 home runs and 80 RBIs. Coats, who now has 82 combined RBIs this season between Charlotte and Birmingham, has recorded his third consecutive 80-RBI season. His two RBIs on Sunday however were all the Knights could muster in the finale against the Bulls.

Durham starter Blake Snell (5-2, 1.60) allowed one run on four hits over five innings and earned the win. The 22-year-old left-hander walked two and struck-out six as Durham beat the Knights for the second time in the series. With the win, the Bulls earned a series split with the Knights.

Providence High School standout Richie Shaffer, a first round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2012 draft, paced the Durham offense with two hits and two RBIs on Sunday. The Charlotte high school star hit four home runs against the Knights in seven games at BB&T Ballpark last month in front of family and friends. Shaffer made his major league debut with the Rays on August 3 and hit his first major league home run on August 4.

Charlotte starter Terance Marin (3-3, 2.76) allowed four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings and was saddled with the loss. Marin, who pitched into the fifth inning on Sunday, lost for just the second time this season as a starter. The Modesto, CA native is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in nine starts with Charlotte this year.

The Knights will now move on and make the trek to Norfolk, VA, to play the first place Norfolk Tides in a two-game series starting on Monday at 7:05 p.m. from Harbor Park. RHP Hector Noesi (2-4, 3.81) will get the start for the Knights in the opener against LHP Chris Jones (8-6, 2.91). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
