Louisville Bats News Release
COLUMBUS, Oh. - The Louisville Bats (63-72) dropped their second straight game, and the first of two games at Huntington Park, falling to the Columbus Clippers (77-58), 4-2, Saturday night.
Columbus opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Jesus Aguilar singled home Michael Martinez to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead. Columbus extended the lead to 2-0 in the second when Erik Gonzalez singled to right, then stole second and third, and scored on a ground out by Bret Hayes.
The Bats responded two innings later with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Kyle Waldrop and Kristopher Negron to knot the game at 2-2.
- In the sixth, a broken-bat single by Anthony Gallas plated Ryan Rohlinger, giving the Clippers a 3-2 lead, and Zach Walters made it a 4-2 game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Louisville went down in order in the eighth and could not make anything of Irving Falu's leadoff single in the ninth.
Right-hander Josh Smith (L, 3-5, 3.83) allowed all four Columbus runs, all earned, on 11 hits and one walk with seven punch-outs over seven innings.
Righty Jordan Cooper (4-2, 3.86) allowed two earned runs on 10 hits and one walk with one strikeout over four and two-thirds innings in a no-decision. Right-hander Trey Haley (W, 4-1, 1.50) earned the win in relief for the Clippers, as he worked one and one-third scoreless innings and allowed just one hit and two walks with one strikeout.
Righty Carlos Marmol (S, 11) earned his 11th save of the season as he worked a scoreless ninth inning with one hit and two strikeouts.
Waldrop led all Louisville batters with three hits, and was one of four Bats with multiple hits in the contest. The three-hit performance was also Waldrop's first three-hit game with Louisville.
The Bats and Clippers will meet again at Huntington Park tomorrow as southpaws Brandon Finnegan (0-2, 5.32) and Ryan Merritt (1-0, 5.00) will square off for Louisville and Columbus respectively. First pitch for tomorrow's game is slated for 6:05 p.m.
