USHL Des Moines Buccaneers

Buccaneers win 6-3

February 5, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers erupted for five goals in the first period and used that momentum to keep the Waterloo Black Hawks at bay and come away with a 6-3 victory.

Both teams were kept scoreless more than halfway through the first period but Nikita Pavlychev buried his sixth goal of the season from Waterloo goaltender Cale Morris' left after being fed from Will Harrison from behind the goal line at 12:13 of the first period. Just 19 seconds later Wyatt Bongiovanni made a backhanded pass up against the right wing boards and put it onto the tape of Justin Howell who went upstairs blocker-side on Morris that snuck under the crossbar to give Des Moines a 2-0 lead. Brendan Demler then hit Patrick Grasso with a long pass that set up his captain behind the defense and Grasso fought off back pressure and beat Morris at 13:43 to end Morris' night. Morris made just 6 saves on 9 shots on goal.

His replacement Drew Hotte didn't fare much better early on as David Keefer beat him high blocker-side on the first shot on Hotte just 32 seconds into his appearance. Waterloo finally got on the board when newly-acquired Zach Yon scored in his first game in a Black Hawk uniform beating goaltender Nick MacNab high glove-side from the left circle at the 17:26 mark of the period. Less than a minute later The Buccaneers regained their four goal lead when Nikita Pavlychev from an odd angle swept the puck around in a long circular motion that trickled through Hotte's pads and stopped just past the goal line at 18:19 of the period. Des Moines outshot Waterloo 13-10 in the opening frame.

Waterloo turned the tables outshooting Des Moines 14 to 9 in the second frame and picked up the only goal of the period at the 10:41 mark. Sam Rossini threw a puck towards the crease from the left wing boards and an outstretched Nick Swaney poked the puck past MacNab's left skate to cut Des Moines' lead to 5-2.

One of Waterloo's issues in trying to get the game tied up was their power play going 0 for 5 on the night and then at 9:35 into the third period Nick Wolff sprung Zach Jordan who scored his third shorthanded goal of the season and team leading 19th goal of the year, and Jordan extended his streak of home games with at least one point to 11, 2nd in the USHL. Waterloo capped off the scoring at 17:26 with a goal by Shane Bowers.

Nick MacNab had 29 saves in the victory, his third in a row and the third in a row for the Buccaneers. Up next for Des Moines is a road contest in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Saturday, February 6th.
