Bryse Wilson Sets Gwinnett Strikeout Record to Sweep Louisville

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Right-hander Bryse Wilson broke a nearly decade-old Gwinnett franchise record with 13 strikeouts as the Stripers completed a three-game sweep of the Louisville Bats with a 4-3 win on Wednesday.

Wilson's 13 strikeouts set Gwinnett's all-time single-game mark, breaking Charlie Morton's feat of 12 on April 12, 2009 at Charlotte; That game was Gwinnett's fourth as a franchise after relocating from Richmond the previous off-season.

Wilson retired the first 10 batters he faced, seven by way of strikeouts. He allowed his only hit to Blake Trahan with one out in the fourth, but immediately erased him with a Gabriel Guerrero double play.

The next 12 Bats after Guerrero were retired as Wilson piled on another six strikeouts in that span. After 8.0 innings, he had faced the minimum 24 batters on 98 pitches - 72 of which were strikes - using a mix of mostly high-90s fastballs, and changeups and sliders as put-away options.

"I was able to command my fastball really well and showed some off-speed behind in the count, and I stayed out of the middle of the zone," Wilson said. "That's really what allowed me to do as well as I did."

Run support came early as Wilson's catcher, Alex Jackson, doubled in the second inning to score Dustin Peterson for the game's first run. In the fourth, Phil Gosselin also doubled to score Peterson to make it 2-0.

The Stripers got two more in the sixth after Austin Riley was hit by a pitch, and Rio Ruiz and Peterson each singled to load the bases. Gosselin then grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice, but shortstop Blake Trahan threw the ball into the dugout to allow another run to score.

All the damage came against former Striper and Lawrenceville native Lucas Sims (L, 4-4), who struck out six but allowed the four runs over 5.1 innings in his first trip back to Coolray Field since being traded to the Cincinnati Reds on July 30. Domingo Tapia, who gave up the Gosselin fielder's choice, allowed the two inherited runners to score at Sims' expense.

Chase Whitley came in for the Stripers to finish off Wilson's gem, but he failed to do it cleanly. After striking out Taylor Sparks to start the inning, Valentin Martinez reached on a third-strike passed ball by Jackson. Pinch-hitter Nick Longhi followed with a single and Brian O'Grady doubled to score Martinez, ending the shutout. Trahan and Steve Selsky added RBI singles, putting the tying and go-ahead runs on base for D.J. Peterson. But Peterson grounded out to second, ending the game and moving Wilson to 3-0 on the season.

Dustin Peterson was 1-for-2 with a walk and hit-by-pitch in the game, extending his on-base streak to 30 games, tied for the longest active streak in the International League. Jackson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Gosselin tacked on two RBIs.

Trahan was the only Bat with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Stripers (58-61) open a big four-game series against the Buffalo Bisons (56-63) Thursday at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Luiz Gohara (2-4, 5.56 ERA) is scheduled to start for Gwinnett. The Bisons have not announced a starter. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:35 p.m.
